Challenge North Tyne has brought together partners from local authorities, social housing, construction and supply chain, innovative materials development, energy, community groups and more to define where the opportunities are for businesses across North of Tyne to develop solutions that our region really needs.

If you are an innovative business able to develop a solution to the challenges of making our homes more energy efficient and have lower carbon footprints, click ‘Submit your Expression of Interest’ at the bottom of this page to begin your application for support.

Prototype funding to the value of £5,000 and a dedicated accelerator programme is available to small and medium sized businesses participating in the programme and operating in Newcastle, Northumberland and North Tyneside.  Following the accelerator programme, the solutions that show the potential for greatest impact will be eligible to apply for further funding to help bring their solutions to market.

Funded through the North of Tyne Combined Authority, this programme will allow businesses to access a range of support, collaboration opportunities and grant funding to harness the inventive ability of our region to deliver impactful and innovative solutions to some of North of Tyne’s most pressing problems.

The programme will bring together key regional partners to present the challenge, such as the International Centre for Connected Construction as well as local government, large corporates and community groups, to collaborate and share resources with businesses best placed to develop solutions with real impact.

What typs of ideas are we looking for?

Are you an SME with a base in North of Tyne that could develop a solution that could contribute to addressing any of the following areas?

  • How might we speed up the transition to net-zero homes?
  • How might we enable homeowners and tenants to make best interest decisions around energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint of their home and encourage the take up of greener solutions?
  • How might we increase the uptake in low carbon materials and construction methods in the building of new homes?
  • How might we ease the upheaval involved in retrofitting homes?
  • How can we ensure our region has access to high quality skilled workers who can help us transition to net-zero at pace?

What support is on offer?

If you submit an idea and are successful in gaining a place on the programme, you can be eligible for:

  • Initial £5,000 grant funding, paid up front with no match funding required, to finance the development and testing of your idea.
  • Introductions to potential clients and 'challenge supporters' - large, regional organisations who want to tackle the problems in the challenge and who can support the development and scaling of your idea.
  • Inclusion on a six-month accelerator programme to support the rapid development and testing of your idea
  • Further funding available for those solutions that demonstrate greatest potential impact to support their realisation
